Are These the End Times? Assassinations, Subway Stabbings and School Shootings: What the Bible Really Says

Are We in the End Times?
Everywhere we turn, the world seems to tremble. Headlines scream of bloodshed, division, and unrest. In just the past two weeks, America has witnessed tragedies that shake us to our core: the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the brutal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on a New York subway, and a Catholic school shooting in Minneapolis that left families broken and communities reeling.
It is natural to ask in moments like these: Are we living in the end times? The question isn’t new. Every generation has wondered if its struggles signaled the end of days. Yet, in asking, we join the long line of believers who seek clarity from Scripture, knowing that only God holds the final answer.
The Shaking of a Nation
Last week, the assassination of Charlie Kirk stunned America. Regardless of one’s political stance, the murder of a cultural leader revealed how fragile peace truly is. Jesus warned us in Matthew 24:12 that “because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” Violence like this leaves us not only grieving a man’s life, but mourning the condition of our nation’s soul.
The week before brought the news of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian woman who fled war only to face violence on a New York subway. She was stabbed repeatedly in front of horrified passengers. The story is a haunting reminder of how sin knows no borders and how evil follows humanity wherever it runs. Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:3 that the last days would be marked by brutality, a word that feels painfully accurate as we see lives destroyed in such acts.
And in Minneapolis, a Catholic school shooting brought terror into a place meant for safety and nurture. Students and teachers scrambled for their lives. Parents received phone calls they pray no other parent will ever experience. These are the kinds of events that make us cry out with the psalmist: “How long, O Lord?” (Psalm 13:1).
These tragedies are more than headlines. They are wounds on the human heart. And while the world debates politics, gun laws, and blame, Scripture reminds us of something deeper: our world is broken, groaning for redemption (Romans 8:22).
Signs and Birth Pains
Jesus told His disciples not to be surprised when they saw wars, violence, and persecution. “These are the beginning of birth pains” (Matthew 24:8). Birth pains come with agony, but they also point to something greater—a coming renewal.
When we look at the Gaza war, Hamas and their allies vowing to destroy Israel, we cannot ignore how this aligns with prophecies like Zechariah 12:2–3, where the nations gather against Jerusalem. But rather than stir fear, these events remind us that God’s Word is trustworthy and that He has already told us how history will unfold.
Yahweh Rapha: The God Who Heals
In the book of Exodus 15:26, after rescuing Israel from slavery, God revealed a new name: Yahweh Rapha — The Lord Who Heals. He gave this name not during a time of peace, but after bitter waters threatened His people’s survival. He healed the water, but He also revealed His character: the God who brings restoration when all seems poisoned and broken.
That same God is with us now. He sees the pain of grieving parents in Minneapolis, the fear of subway passengers in New York, the despair of a nation torn apart by political violence. And He is still Yahweh Rapha — the Healer who meets us in the valley of shadows.
What the Bible Really Says About the End
So, are these the end times? Scripture’s answer is humbling: we don’t know the day or hour (Matthew 24:36). What we do know is that each tragedy, each war, and each act of violence is a reminder that this world is not our home. We are pilgrims waiting for the return of the King.
The signs we see around us are not meant to paralyze us with fear, but to awaken us to hope. Jesus said, “When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come” (Mark 13:7).
Hope, Not Fear
For believers, these are not days of despair. They are days of endurance and hope. Paul’s words in Romans 8:31 anchor us: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Fear loses its power when we remember that Christ has already overcome the world (John 16:33).
The school shooting, the subway stabbing, the assassination—they are horrific reminders of sin’s power. But they are not the final word. The final word belongs to Jesus, who promised, “Surely I am coming soon” (Revelation 22:20).
We may not know if we are in the final chapter of history, but we know the Author of history. The same God who called Himself Yahweh Rapha still heals, restores, and redeems today.
So we live watchfully, but not fearfully. We grieve, but not without hope. We see the world unraveling, but we cling to the One who holds it all together. And when the world asks, “Are these the end times?” we answer: only God knows. But this we are certain of—Christ is coming, and in Him we are secure.
